Johanna Blakley: Lessons from fashion's free culture
Summary
According to “Lessons from Fashion’s Free Culture”, Johanna Blakley presented about copyrights protection. In the world there is trademark protection but no copyrights protection. Although people knew is illegal to copy others design there are no a good way to control it. Designer will take elements from somewhere and mix with their style. We will consider this is arts and new styles are also is influenced by culture. Some fashionable products are from mixture customs. The designer told to the public their inspirations were come from street. There are three points about virtues of copying: democratization of fashion, fast fashion and induced same styles. Because of that, designers forced come up some new ideas in order to make harder to let other people copying. The products have to be unique. Nowadays, digital world leads to most innovation. Fashion might be a really good place to start looking for a model for creative industries in the future.
Response
I strongly agree with Professor Johanna’s idea about no copy protection. As we all known, Paris is the most famous city by the fashionable artistic production, especially garments. It embodies itself history and the art. Most famous brands come from Paris. In somewhere, we could find many imitations appear around us but in different brand. Therefore, we could buy many fashionable products with cheap price. That is why we have many clothing companies in the world and their change products extremely quickly. This is a tough job for designers, because there are numerous exactly same products as them. If they want keep the job, they must to create products much harder to copy and new styles. They working from the texture, make more experience product in order to protect their own rights. In my opinion, people could copy others style and mix with their own style. if clothing company wants survival leads to copy others styles, because people prefer fashion and new things. However, I think copying is not good and unfair to other companies. In conclusion, copying is not absolutely terrible way to do business. Although we consider this is plagiarism and broke the laws. If we act us like other people, we should understand our job is ensure make our company survival in what an such huge competing world. We must make money to support family. For the interaction of world, this is a way the world to investigate different culture and customs.

ReplyDeleteActually, I am really interested in this speech because I want to be a fashion reporter in future. After I watched this video, I think fashion designers should consider their design in future, such as copyrights and protections. Johanna is really funny since she gave lots of real examples for us. For example, H&M is a really successful fashion business. Their design is really fashion, but those products are not expensive. However, some high brands like Chanel, Miu Miu, Gucci or Dior are really expensive. I think there are not so many people can afford the high brand products. Therefore, if people want to buy fashionable clothes, they have to find fast fashion companies, such as H&M or ZARA. It's true that H&M and ZARA design are same with some high brands. For me, I think high brand and fast fashion are also different as their material is totally different. Fashion industry is a big marketing in the world, so designers should be concerned about their copy rights and protections.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with Sky. With the development of society, the intellectual property rights are more and more important. Since the intellectual property shown up, it stopped the proliferation of pirated products. Also it has mobilized the people engaged in scientific and technological research and creativity. It provides a legal mechanism for the intellectual achievements into productive forces, applied to the production of building up, resulting in huge economic and social benefits. It promotes human civilization and economic development. The intellectual property is not far away from us. If you are a consumer, when you are watching movies, listening to music, playing the computer and reading books that are created in the enjoyment of intellectual work of others. If you are manufacturers or service providers, then your product or service in order to distinguish it from other goods or services. Considering having patents, trademarks, copyrights, or your business will not be long. Intellectual property is so active that permeates people's daily lives.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the point that copyrights in fashion is necessary because no one would like to see their designs to be copied and labelled as other's idea. However, in this fashion area, the lines between each idea of design is very slender. For example, one person takes the design of other and slightly changes a bit and it will become that person's design. Therefore, although it may be unfair to some designers whose ideas or designs have been stolen, that is a disadvantage they have to know after stepping into this fashion world. It may be irritating and hard to accept but every areas of life has their own dark side, either fashion. ^ _ ^ (Just my opinion)
ReplyDeleteI agree with the speaker and Sky that copyright is necessary in the fashion world. As we know creativity is an art, it expresses someone’s ability to build his/her own dream to reality in his/her own way, so why some people copy someone’s idea and use for their own interest without his/her permission. This is not fair and this is illegal. It is true that in every field, there is a provision of copyright, but fashion is the only field without it. For example, in India, plagiarism is very common and people copy products of famous brands like Reebok, Levi’s, and so on. Suppose, you go to the Levi’s franchise shop and notice the price of the Levi’s jeans and then you go to the small shops, here you find jeans with the name Levi’s and you would be surprised with the price, the shopkeeper tells you that this is the original Levi’s jean showing duplicate tag of Levi’s and you will definitely be confused what is the reason of different price of both jeans. The only thing is that there is no copyright in fashion. I think there should be a provision of copyright in fashion. (Word count:197)
